Demetrios’ Brave StandThe National Herald, May 14, 2004 - You could feel a sigh of relief coming from all over the country on the news reported by this paper—Issue 343—that Archbishop Demetrios disagreed with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomaios’ decision to take stern measures against Archbishop Christodoulos of Greece. It is apparent that, had Demetrios acted differently, a crisis could have developed, once again dividing the community. Instead, the status of Demetrios has been much enhanced and we are told that numerous organizations have written to his Eminence expressing their support on this issue. By the same token, it is becoming clear that Patriarch Bartholomaios is losing even more of the support he once enjoyed in the community. It is unfortunate, perhaps, but that is the price paid for a very unsteady stewardship, during which he marginalized the most important aspect of his mission: the spiritual. Meanwhile, as of this writing, an effort is underway by the Greek government to end the conflict between the two churches. It is to the benefit of everyone that a solution is found soon. However, we are not that hopeful that this will come to happen. Time only will tell. |
