OCL has a right to protest

To the Editor,

The recent National Herald article by Theodore Kalmoukos ("OCL Lawsuit…A Theological Perspective, April 17-18 issue) puzzles me.  Here is an intelligent person telling the rest of us that we should have no voice in the governance of our Church—after four different charters had given us that voice.  All of a sudden the Patriarch, who wants to be a Pope, decides that only he knows what’s best for the progress of our Church in America.

Mr. Kalmoukos even reminds us that it was in 1996 that the Patriarch took away our Archdiocese of North & South America—without any input from the so-called clergy-laity congress.  In other words, the Patriarch decided it was best, for him, to divide and conquer by splitting us up into four separate churches.  Why in the world should our local churches spend the vast amounts of needed funds to send our priests and delegates to the national congresses just to rubber stamp a dictatorial document?  It would be cheaper just to let the Patriarch send us his directives from Turkey and everyone stay home and use the money for our local churches.

Yes, Mr. Kalmoukos, many of us could quit the Greek Archdiocese and join some other Orthodox Church, and maybe some of us will.   But I give credit to the OCL, at least they have the courage to stand up and be heard—if not by the Patriarch—then at least by the courts.  Americans were not built to surrender to a dictatorship.

It is obvious that many believe that they have been wronged, not only by the Patriarch, but also by the Bishops who were made Metropolitans just in time to defend the new imposed Patriarchal "take it or leave it" charter.
