CRISIS OVER CHARTER THREATENS CHURCH’S FUTURE

Chicago Area Open Forum - May 8

If you are concerned about the future of the Greek Orthodox Church in America attend an Open Forum hosted by Orthodox Christian Laity [OCL-Chicago area] dealing with the attempt by the Patriarchate in Istanbul, Turkey to impose a new Charter on the Church, without Clergy Laity Congress approval. Attend this Forum and familiarize yourself with the facts so that you may express your concerns with your Parish's delegates who will attend the Clergy-Laity Congress in New York in July 2004 and who will be the people who can help decide the destiny of our Church.

The speakers, Evan Chriss (Baltimore); George Karcazes (Chicago); Andy Kartalis (Cleveland); Peter Marudas (Baltimore); will summarize: . The history surrounding the proposed new Charter;

  • How the Charter revision process has been violated;

  • How the proposed changes harm the balance and synergy between

  • Clergy, Laity and Hierarchs which define Orthodoxy;

  • Why thirty-one plaintiffs, (including twelve Archons), of the Church from across America      are asking a New York Court to clarify the Amendment clause of the existing Charter and compel the Archdiocese to follow its own rules.

             (An ample opportunity will be afforded for questions and dialogue).
