Islam-Christian dialogue 'vital' By SOMAN BABY A top Bahraini official yesterday stressed the importance of continued dialogues between Islamic and Christian leaders to foster world peace and security. International co-operation between the two divine religions, Islam and Christianity, is extremely important for building new bridges of peace and friendship, Islamic Affairs Under-Secretary Shaikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Khalifa told a visiting Christian leader yesterday. He met at his office Indian Orthodox Church deputy head, His Beatitude Thomas Mar Thimothios Metropolitan, who is the Catholicos designate, and a delegation from the St Mary's Orthodox Church, headed by vicar Father Abraham Joseph. As Islam and Christianity represent the majority of the world's population, it is vital to consolidate and bolster co-operation between the Muslims and Christians to achieve peaceful co-existence, said Shaikh Khalifa. "Islam and Christianity have far more in common than they have differences between them since their followers share a common spiritual heritage," he noted. Shaikh Khalifa praised the contributions of the Indian Orthodox Church supreme head His Holiness Moron Mar Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews II towards the success of the first Islamic-Christian Dialogue conference held in Bahrain. Mar Thimothios conveyed the greetings of the Catholicos to Bahrain's leaders and praised the tolerant policies pursued by the Kingdom, which respect all religions and people of all faiths. He specially thanked His Majesty King Hamad for the generous contribution given to the church for the construction of its new building in Salmaniya.
"Regular, frank
and constructive dialogue between the leaders of
the two monotheistic religions will enable them to
become proactive, by removing the barriers between
faiths and communities," said Mar Thimothios. |
